Music from My Current Work in Progress

Posted on

On advice from one of the workshops I attended at Chicago RWA’s Spring Fling Conference, I created a playlist for my current WIP. The novel is about a driven woman who is an urban developer and a seemingly shiftless venture capitalist’s son – one of her primary investors – who fall in love, despite their obstacles.

I put together these tracks to remind me of the hero and heroine. It’s a bright, vibrant collection of hip hop, pop, jazz and alternative. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent listening to these songs as I complete my manuscript. I hope you’ll listen and enjoy it as much as I have.

Busy Year!

Posted on Updated on

I have been so busy, it’s hard to believe it’s April already. So many things to share. Most recently, I was in Sin City (Las Vegas) participating in a diversity panel. It was a lot of fun and I was happy to serve as a resource for my fellow writers. Among other things, I saw the Chippendales. . .  And a number of super sexy cover models.

That’s me (on the left) along with two super smart ladies, MK Schiller and Isabelle Drake. Please pick up one of their books! They are fantastic authors, as well as awesome humans.

There were so many parties, but the one I enjoyed the most was the Cirque du Punk party, where I was able to get down with some Cosplay.

Sage Spelling (left) went all out with a black ensemble that knocked the crowds out!

All in all, the RT Booklovers Conference did not disappoint. In fact, I’m probably still not fully recovered.

Next up is the Chicago Spring Fling on May 19th – 21st, where I’ll be signing a copy of my latest novella, Dark Hearts. I’m giving away some pretty great prizes and a gift basket just for buying my book and doing a few things you were probably going to do anyway.

If you happen to be attending, please stop by my booth.

So, as you can see, the life of a romance writer is loaded with activities. I guess I should actually get some writing done now.

Thank you for stopping by and remember, love with your full heart.

Fury Rising – Book 1 Stunners Series

Posted on

In about 2 weeks, while I’m partying with some fellow readers and writers at the 2014 Romantic Times Convention, another of my children will be born.

Fury Rising is the first in my urban fantasy Stunners Series.

This book really was a labor of love. One of my dear friends called  it ‘sexy X-Men’. (Heehee) That part I won’t deny. In addition to the sex, I wanted to see a strong female protagonist who is still dealing with common issues of women in the workplace, even in the dystopian world I created.

Melanie Hawks is misunderstood. As the team trainer for STTUN, she is quick witted, sassy and volatile. And she’s in love with Malice, the team’s commander.

Their relationship is difficult at best, but before she is able to figure it all out, The Rizen – a group of mutants dedicated to the absolute destruction of the United Nations and STTUN – makes a bold move that could enable them to succeed in their deathly mission.

This story was a magnificent blast and I can’t wait for its release.

There’ll also be a launch party and many events and surprises tweeted live from the Romantic Times Convention!

I hope you’ll join me as I welcome my newest family member, Fury. I hope you love her as much as I do.

Are Writers Whiners??

Posted on

Hi all,

Tonight, in light of all the bemoaning I’ve heard this week, I thought I would offer a few helpful tips to the new author, authors of small epubs, authors that haven’t made their first million yet, etc.

First, I understand your frustration. I spent about $300 on promotion last year. My first royalty check was $1.67. Am I miffed? Not really. The way I look at it, this was my first year of real publication. When Walter P. Chrysler began his automotive company, I am sure that he did not sell 2.4M (total Chrysler sales 2012) cars that first year. What do I think he did? He consistently put out a product that at times was better than his competitors and sometimes worse, but he didn’t give up. No one has time to feel sorry for themselves. You should consistently put out a quality product and eventually, people will buy that product.

Next, don’t put down the smaller ePub houses because they don’t have the money to hire a publicist for you. Amanda Hocking did what? She did it herself. That old saying, if you want something done right, do it yourself – it should be changed to if you want something done at all, do it yourself. Work hard at promoting. That’s not to say that the results will be immediate, but a trickle of water formed the Grand Canyon.

I really want to say this and I hope no one is offended. It is the truth as I know it. There are a million authors out there that aren’t published yet. Many have cried real tears as their submissions come back one after another, after another, rejected. This is their dream. It’s your dream and mine. If you are lucky enough to have a book in publication, please remember how truly special are your circumstances.

Finally, I believe in the motto that hard work and a failed attempt beats the shit out of pissing and moaning. Be diligent. Stop complaining. Try to put all that energy of looking at what other authors are pulling down in sales figures and spend some time honing your craft. Become the best. That’s all any of us can do. It is a drain to hear how horrible it is for us that are published by smaller publishing houses.

Be better than that. And remember, writers are not whiners. We are responsible for art that will be enjoyed by our society for many years to come. That in itself is worth a million bucks, in my humble opinion.

Until next time, all best.
